All this and more has been made possible through the generous participants in the annual Cadiz Steenberg Classic golf tournament earlier this month.
A total of R647 500 was raised during the week-long event and has been distributed to the following beneficiaries:
• The Westlake United Church Trust (WUCT). This will go towards a new roof and solar heating system in the Westlake Community Centre among other projects. WUCT provides Westlake residents - including those infected or affected by HIV/Aids - with support through empowerment, education and skills development programmes.
• The South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA). This will be used to cover the cost of horse feed and vet bills. SARDA provides the disabled with therapeutic and recreational horse riding.
• The cash-strapped The Emma Animal Rescue Society (TEARS) which will be used to develop much needed new facilities at Wenga Farm. TEARS rescues, rehabilitates, re-unites and re-homes lost, abandoned, abused and neglected animals while providing basic health care such as vaccinations, de-worming and parasite control to disadvantaged communities.
• The Haemophilia Foundation which will support existing projects as well as provide a much needed wheelchair to a patient. The foundation provides emotional and financial support to sufferers of haemophilia and similar conditions.
• The Steenberg Caddy Program which supports caddies during the quiet winter months through daily meals and food hampers.
• The Steenberg Clinic which provides a full service clinic, including free HIV/Aids and TB screening to all Steenberg Golf Estate staff, including security, caddies, course staff and homeowners domestic staff.
The Steenberg Classic has grown since 2000 from a one-day tournament to a week-long, fund-raising event, hosting daily competitions including a parent/child contest and culminating in the main Classic event on the last day. This year saw a dynamic team of ladies, comprising Bianca Rivollier, Erna Swart, Gill Gallo and Louie Stuart walk away with first prize in the main event, the Classic.
Steenberg’s Director of Golf, Ian Kennedy, said the event offered one of the best golfing experiences in the country while participants were all directly playing a part in uplifting the local community. Lead sponsor, Cadiz Asset Management’s CEO Frank Cadiz said the company’s involvement was based on its belief that responsible and caring corporate citizenship is a key component of true business leadership.
“We are incredibly proud to be associated with the participants in this event, Steenberg Golf Estate, and the beneficiaries who are located within the communities in which we work and live. Giving back through this type of initiative is not only rewarding but incredibly necessary to ensure we play our part in supporting all sectors of society.” An overwhelmed Dave Barnes of WUCT said: “It’s enormously humbling; it’s a Godsend”.
Since 2000, The Steenberg Classic has raised close to R4 million for community upliftment organisations located near the golf course.
