SA Golfers to Raise Funds for Communities

Around 1 000 Cape golfers are aiming to raise over R600 000 for charity in November in the week-long Cadiz Steenberg Classic, one of the biggest fund-raising golf tournaments in South Africa.

The event, sponsored by financial services group Cadiz, runs from 28 October to 3 November and will be hosted at Cape Town's Steenberg Golf Estate - voted the number one golf resort in SA and number two in the world by Conde Naste.

The Cadiz Steenberg Classic raises funds for community upliftment organisations located near the golf course. Last year, it raised a record R625 000. The aim is to top that figure in 2012 and boost the total funds raised over the last 12 years to over R3.2-million.

Illustrious members

The Steenberg Golf Course boasts a host of illustrious members, including Springbok rugby players Francois Pienaar, Morne du Plessis, Lance Sherrell, Robbie Brink and HO de Villiers. Pienaar, Sherrell and Brink will be participating in this year's tournament.

Since 2000, the Cadiz Steenberg Classic has grown from a one-day tournament to a week-long, fund raising event, hosting daily competitions including a parent/child contests and culminating in the Cadiz Steenberg Classic on the last day.

The week of golf is followed by a gala event and prize-giving. Several fund raising efforts throughout the week, including a raffle and auction, are expected to yield over R600 000.

True business leadership

The CEO of , Frank Cadiz, says the company's involvement is based on its belief that responsible and caring corporate citizenship is a key component of true business leadership.

Cadiz Asset Management CEO Frank Cadiz says the funds raised will be donated to beneficiaries in the broader Steenberg community, namely the SA Riding for the Disabled Association, animal rescue society TEARS, the Westlake Community Centre, the Steenberg Clinic and Caddy Programme, and the Haemophilia Foundation.

"Business has a responsibility to help meet the needs of society at large and an obligation to step forward and contribute time, energy and resources to better the world in which we operate. This event is one small way we are contributing to the community in which we live and work," said Cadiz.

Great golfing experience

Steenberg golf director Ian Kennedy said the event offered one of the best golfing experiences in the country while participants were all directly playing a part in uplifting the local community.
